Golden Visa Greece: the Ultimate guide 2021

Greece introduces the Digital Nomad Visa

With the pandemic normalising remote work, Greece has decided to seize this opportunity and pave the way in this new trend forming, by offering third country nationals the right to work in Greece for up to 12 months. In relation to this, the Greek government recently introduced a new Law 4825/2021 (Government Gazette Α’ 157/4.9.2021) targeted at Digital Nomads, who wish to work remotely from Greece.

What does the Digital Nomad Visa entail?

Holders of the Digital Nomad Visa will be allowed to legally reside in Greece based on the fact that they are able to justify that they can work remotely. This Visa does not however permit individuals to find employment or conduct any business activity within Greece.

The Visa is granted for the duration of 12 months. In the event that the individual would like to extend this period, he/she will be required to reapply for the issuance of a Digital Nomad residence permit which will be valid for a period of up to 2 years (with possibility for renewal), making this an appealing Visa for people who desire to maintain their work life but who are also craving new life experiences.

What are the requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa?

One must meet the following prerequisites in order to be eligible for the Digital Nomad Visa:

  • The individual must be a third country national (Non-EU citizen) who is either considered a dependent employee or self-employed.
  • The individual must work remotely, only with employers or clients outside of Greece.
  • The main requirement is to provide evidence that the individual has or earns a sufficient income in order to cover his/her expenses without being a burden on the Greek state. The minimum amount is set at three and a half thousand (3,500) euros per month.
  • The amount mentioned above refers to the net income one must prove. In other words, this amount will be equal to the income one may retain after the necessary taxes have been deducted, in the country of employment.
  • A description of the individuals current role will be required.
  • An employment contract or proof of employment.
  • VISA and administration fees.

What is the process of issuance for the Digital Nomad Visa?

The application and issuance of the Digital Nomad Visa will be handled by the Greek consular authority of the place of residence of the individual involved.  Once the Visa has been approved the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum will grant the residence permit to the individual at stake.

Can you apply for a Digital Nomad Visa, if you are already residing in Greece?

If you’re already residing in Greece and are interested in applying for a Digital Nomad residence permit you will only be eligible if you have entered Greece with a uniform type of Visa or under a Visa waiver regime. In this case, the individual as well as members of his/her family will be able to apply at the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum for a one stop  service  providing that they apply within the period of validity of their existing Visa. Proof of residence address would be required in this scenario.

Spouse and family member entitlements with Digital Nomad Visa

In the event that the individual is married or/and has children, the amount of money required in order to be entitled to a Digital Nomad Visa is increased in order for all family members to have the right to reside in Greece. For a joint application with a spouse the amount is raised by twenty percent (20%) and fifteen percent (15%) for each child.
